In adhesive coating, one surface is the adhesive while the other is the adherend. The adhesive is a coating capable of holding materials together by surface attachment. The adherend is the workpiece that is held to another workpiece by the adhesive. Structural (engineering) adhesives are bonding agents used for transferring required loads between adherends exposed to service environments.
