Broaching is a process for internal or external machining of flat, round or contoured surfaces. Machines of different types are used to push or pull a multitooth cutting tool or the workpiece in relation to each other to remove material. Each tooth on the cutting tool is generally higher than the preceding tooth, increasing the depth of the cut as the operation progresses.

Surface broaching applications are practically unlimited. Any external form can be produced as long as the surfaces are in a straight line and unobstructed. Such forms include slots and keyways, fat and contoured surfaces, rack and gear teeth, and serrations. Important advantages include high productivity, the capability of maintaining close tolerances and producing good finishes, economical operation and versatility.
