Porosity, a sponge-like area in an otherwise sound metal part, has been allowing leaks from metal castings since casting was discovered. After trying various ways to fix it, thermosetting plastics were found to seal the leaks when used with proper techniques. Under vacuum and pressure, an impregnating liquid is solidified within the wall of a casting, filling the leakage path.
