Anodizing is the electrolytic treatment of metals that forms stable films or coatings on the metal's surface. Aluminum and magnesium are anodized to the greatest extent, but zinc, beryllium, titanium, zirconium and thorium are also used. More durable than paint, anodizing is used primarily for decorative purposes, but aluminum is also anodized for functional reasons (such as to prevent oxidation).
