Reference Designs Help OEMs Get Custom Enclosures to Market Faster

Flexible designs are paired with hot-swap modules to reduce costs of developing enclosures for OEM rack mount systems

LOS ANGELES– Electronic Enclosures, Inc. (EEi) has evolved to keep pace with the evolution of the electronics industry over the last several decades. The company has become more focused in recent years on providing design, manufacturing, and box-build services involving higher-end, high-tech electronic systems.

For years, EEi had developed custom enclosures for OEM rack mount systems from scratch. Then, a team led by the company’s founder and chief technical officer, Don Goss, determined that it could save OEM customers significant amounts of time and money by doing things differently.

The EEi team developed a reference design system that uses hot-swap modules for power, cooling, and other components to create custom enclosures faster than previously possible.

At the core of the system are a series of flexible reference designs for 19-inch rack mount chassis, covering a broad spectrum of customers’ system requirements for electromechanical architecture. Guided by a customer’s system requirements, an engineer can select an appropriate reference design from the many options and quickly stretch it into shape.

The designs make it possible to quickly incorporate required modules for power, fans, drives, and field-replaceable units (FRUs). A custom system concept that demonstrates electro-mechanical requirements can be ready to present in a day, as opposed to a week or more, according to EEi.

“After reviewing years of switches, routers, servers, et cetera, for telco, medical, industrial, commercial, aerospace, and defense equipment, we developed this modular reference design system where each implementation results in a unique system,” Goss said in a company release. “We can go from a customer’s concept to manufacturing in less than half the time.”

The flexibility to immediately make modifications that adhere to a customer’s requirements is key, the company said. As the mechanical design is modified, the manufacturing documentation parametrically follows.

Electronic Enclosures Inc. ( said that its flexible and modular reference design system grew out of the need to provide resources that could help customers reduce their time-to-market and development costs while improving their product’s lifespan. According to EEi, the bell curve projecting a product’s revenue-generating potential over its lifespan is “greatly improved by an early market introduction.”
