SMC Powder Metallurgy Wins Award in International Design Competition
ST. MARYS, Pa.—SMC Powder Metallurgy, Inc., a major international supplier of custom powdered metal (PM) parts, recently won an Award of Distinction in the automotive engine category of the Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition. The award, one of seven Awards of Distinction presented in categories ranging from automotive chassis to hardware/appliances and electronic/electrical, was given for a stainless steel flange that the company produced for Kendrion FAS Controls.
SMC Powder Metallurgy President and CEO Steve Lanzel, along with Brad Lewis, engineering manager, and Dave Parsons, vice president of sales, accepted the award at the POWDERMET 2015 conference in San Diego, California. The competition is sponsored annually by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF), an international trade association for the metal powder producing and consuming industries.
According to a release from SMC Powder Metallurgy (now Catalus Corporation), the award-winning component connects and seals a spill valve operating in an automotive fuel system. The valve was specially designed for gasoline direct injection technology, facilitating lower fuel consumption and higher efficiency.
The powdered metal flange replaces a wrought part that required heavy machining, and is fabricated from a proprietary premix developed in order to achieve the required dimensional stability. SMC’s customer believes that this is the only PM part used in a high pressure fuel system, and it is expected into expand into other platforms, according to a video provided by MPIF.
