Sensera Expands Precision Fiber Optic Assembly Capability

BOSTON–Sensera Inc. (MicroDevices), a designer and manufacturer of high-performance sensors and modules, has expanded its capabilities to include precision fiber optic assemblies, according to a release from its parent company, Sensera Limited. The new manufacturing capabilities are expected to enable Sensera to provide greater value to a range of customers in the medical technology sector.

New applications for Sensera’s fiber optic capabilities are reported to include enhancement of miniature microscopy; measurement of intervascular blood pressure; shape sensing for minimally invasive surgery; and illumination of endoscope for cancer detection.

The newly added capabilities are intended to accelerate the technical strengths of Sensera’s customers in the global markets for fiber optics and medical fiber, which total $6.5 billion and $1 billion (U.S dollars), respectively, Sensera said, citing Grand View Research as the source.

“Sensera provides critically-dimensioned optics on the miniature or microscale level for technically advanced industries,” said Tim Stucchi, general manager of Sensera Inc., in a company release. “By partnering through concept, design, and delivery, we accelerate our customers’ technical strengths in a competitive industrial marketplace.”

Industry analyst Geoffrey Garth of 4080 Consulting concurred, saying “Sensera’s capabilities in the growing $6.5 billion global fiber optic marketplace will clearly bring new value to clients.”

As a result of the additions, Sensera’s customers have access to complex and specialized polymer fiber coatings, optical alignments, fiber polishing, cable assemblies, optical power measurements, pressure calibration, and temperature cycle testing, the company said.

Sensera’s precision micro/electro-optical and mechanical systems and assemblies are used in industrial systems and aerospace applications, in addition to the medical industry. The company holds ISO 9001 and 13485 (medical) quality certifications.

“Sensera’s capabilities continue to be refined,” said Sensera CEO Ralph Schmitt, in the release. “The company prides itself on the ability to design and build end-to-end sensor-based solutions, including full optical and mechanical component fabrication. Providing customers greater value added through sensor-based vertical integration is a core company strategy. The expansion of fiber optic assembly capabilities is another step in fulfilling that strategy and has been driven by specific customer needs and requirements.”

Sensera’s ( capabilities span hardware and software across the vertical technology spectrum. In addition to designing and manufacturing unique structures, such as micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and sensors, Sensera develops wireless networked systems and software that, when combined, drive an entire IoT platform solution.
