Xact Wire EDM Corporation Marks 25 Years in Business
WAUKESHA, Wis.--This year marks the 25th consecutive year of business for Xact Wire EDM Corp., a Waukesha, Wisconsin-based provider of wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) and small-hole EDM services. Founded in 1984 by Jeff Gubbins and John Dora, Xact Wire EDM began operations with a single wire EDM machine in a small rental space, serving mostly local manufacturers of stamping dies and molds. Rapid growth enabled the company to acquire additional wire EDM machines approximately every six months, and, in 1986, Xact acquired a machine and the software for 4-axis (independent U-V) cutting and automatic wire threading. Since then, Xact has grown into a company with the resources and experience to handle "the most demanding requirements" in industries such as automotive, consumer products, paper processing, defense, and electronics.
Xact Wire EDM (www.xactedm.com) has been ISO 9001:2008 certified since 2007. Today, the company's operations include a temperature-controlled 10,000-square-foot facility in Waukesha that's designed specifically for wire EDM. Xact also has a fully equipped branch location in Cary, Illinois to provide better service to customers in the Chicago area. In 2005, the company added 5,000 square feet--as well as several machines with the latest linear motor technology--to its facility in Wisconsin. Support equipment for Xact's wire machines are said to include multiple programming stations, high-speed small hole machines, video inspection systems, coordinate measuring machines, and part marking machines (pin stamping and laser).
Much of the company's growth can be attributed to the shared beliefs of co-owners Gubbins and Dora, who had worked together for five years prior to starting Xact. The two entrepreneurs believed that to succeed, they needed to listen very closely to their customers, constantly hire and train good people, frequently acquire new advanced technology, always strive to improve, and be willing to quickly move into new emerging application areas. From the beginning, the company says, it has keenly focused on wire EDM and on functioning as an extension of its customers' own capabilities.
"Our culture of continuous improvement and our employees' willingness to learn has contributed greatly to our success," said Gubbins. "They've learned a great deal by listening closely to customers and by being focused on one field--wire EDM."
