Manufacturer Provides Customized Seals in Large Diameters

Plastic Injection Molding

HOUSTON, Tex.—The capability to produce large-diameter, custom polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seals to a user’s exact specifications is particularly important for applications that require more than a standard size, as well as critical tolerances. One company that offers this capability is Plastomer Technologies, an ISO 9001:2000-certified manufacturer of customized PTFE products and a provider of engineered plastic machining and fabrication services. The company has installed a new 1250-ton press that it’s using to custom-produce PTFE seals up to 60 inches in diameter.

Plastomer Technologies’ Texolon® brand mechanical seal rings are made from either compression-molded virgin or filled PTFE materials, and are typically used for critical applications in the aerospace, automotive, chemicals, and offshore industries, among others. Its Texolon PTFE seal rings stand up particularly well to corrosive liquids, high pressures, and distinct variations in pressure. The custom large- and small-diameter seals are said to ensure minimal maintenance downtime and repair.

Plastomer Technologies produces mechanical seals and backup rings customized to specifications from 1 inch to 60 inches in diameter, in virgin and high-purity materials. The company also offers a variety of PTFE compounds that can be customized to fit particular applications.

The firm’s PTFE seals are self-lubricating and have a long service life because the material retains its original properties over a long period of time—even at extreme temperatures, in ultraviolet (UV) light, and when exposed to oils, oxidizing agents, and solvents. The PTFE material is also extremely resistant to corrosion, especially from acids and harsh inorganic and organic chemicals. Additionally, the original properties of PTFE remain the same even after extended periods of exposure in salt water.

Plastomer reports that it is “experienced with all engineered plastics,” and provides seals machined from PPS, Acetal, Solvay Advanced Polymers’ Torlon®, Victrex PEEK™, or other specified materials. Material selection assistance is available to ensure the optimal material or PTFE compound is being used for extreme operating environments.

Rugged PTFE Fiber Brings Strength, Durability to Marine Applications

At its Newtown, Pa., facility, Plastomer Technologies manufactures Solar Thread, the new brand name for its PTFE fiber sewing threads for weather-resistant applications. Solar Thread is designed specifically for the industrial outdoor fabric market and is commonly used as sewing thread for marine fabrics--such as boat covers--because of its durability, strength, and UV resistance. The water-resistant PTFE fiber product reportedly offers less abrasiveness than other materials and is chemically inert. It also offers low flammability, and withstands temperatures from -250°C to 260°C.

Its ability to remain durable in harsh environmental conditions makes Solar thread suitable for additional outdoor applications, including awnings, umbrellas, and convertible car tops. Plastomer Technologies manufactures Solar Thread in a wide range of deniers to fit customized needs.
