Everything You Need to Know About Die Casting:
New Techniques Reduce Porosity
The metal delivery and distribution system being used in high-tech die casting is designed to minimize air entrapment and thus minimize porosity. The objective is to deliver the molten metal through a system of smoother transitions and gradual changes in direction, compensated by increasing velocity and either continuous or atomized jet-flow from the gating system.
Many die casters are now utilizing advanced vacuum systems which virtually eliminate porosity problems in die castings. These systems involve modifications in the die's gate and runner system design and the use of automatic forced evacuation of air entrapped in the die cavity. The systems produce sound castings with greatly reduced porosity, even in cases of complex component design.
