Custom Gear Manufacturer Using New CNC Gear Measurement System to Ensure Quality
DUBUQUE, Iowa--The Adams Company, a custom manufacturer of precision gears and shafts, recently purchased a PECo CNC Gear Measurement System that the company is using to ensure the quality and consistency of gears, splines, worms, and gear cutting tools. The new equipment, an ND430 CNC Gear Measurement System from Process Equipment Company, comes with analysis and tolerance evaluation packages that are consistent with AGMA and ISO specifications, according to an announcement by The Adams Company.
Currently housed in the company's environmentally-controlled inspection laboratory, the ND430 CNC Gear Measurement System is capable of providing a variety of measurements, including tooth profile, helix slope, and angle; pitch variation and pitch line run-out; tooth thickness; size over/under pins; and micro finish. Parts may be traditionally aligned between centers using a standard motorized tailstock or mounted on a precision chuck device. With either location method, the company says, a true part coordinate reference system may be established using the ND Series coordinate transformation algorithms and 3D mapping system to conduct measurements according to actual or functional part datum features.
"The accuracy and repeatability of the inspection process is great," says Mark Derby, the company's operations manager. "It also provides documentation for our quality control guidelines and traceability if questions arise further down the line."
In addition to using the PECo Gear Measurement System for final set-up inspection and process control, The Adams Company uses the PECo to reverse engineer gears and shafts in order to identify the exact dimensions of parts supplied by its customers.
