New Plastic Hull Design Permits NuCanoe to Launch New Watercraft
ASHTABULA, Ohio--Watercraft manufacturer NuCanoe, Inc., of Bellingham, Wash. (www.NuCanoe.com),was enjoying a 65% increase in sales during 2011 when the company's director of business development, Blake Young, presented rotational molding and design company Meese (formerly MODRoto) (www.meese-inc.com) with a wish list of ideas that he and his colleagues had been accumulating for a new model. Meese had been instrumental earlier in helping the company meet customer demand for its pioneering NuCanoe models. The Ashtabula, Ohio-based rotomolder had manufactured, assembled, and shipped the versatile boats directly to dealers while cutting shipping costs by 50% and lead times by 93%.
In developing the latest model, Meese engineers drew on the strengths of the original NuCanoe designs and integrated a variety of structural and functional concepts. The result of these efforts is the NuCanoe Frontier, which has reportedly sparked a 300% increase in 2012 pre-season orders. Launched in February, the NuCanoe Frontier features a sturdy, 12-foot long hull that is rotationally molded from polyethylene in a single piece to manage 650 lbs. on board. Yet its 77 lb. weight is said to be less than virtually any watercraft of comparable capacity used for fishing, hunting, paddling, and other activities.
The hull's 20-inch wide "Cast and Blast" deck enables two adults to safely stand up and even walk around. Two seats that swivel 360 degrees may be positioned anywhere along the 70-inch "Freedom Track" mounted inside the hull. Places for fishing rods, paddles, tackle boxes, beverages and other gear are molded into the hull along with a motor mount and universal dock mounts.
"We always bring Meese into the process early because they can tell us which ideas would work and which won't, so we don't waste time or resources," says Young. "Their ability to produce high quality in high volumes, assemble everything with a variety of options, and handle shipping allows us to focus attention on our dealers and our customers. There is no way we could've supported this growth rate without Meese."
