HERMITAGE, Pa.--A major prime contractor in the nuclear field has awarded Solar Atmospheres of Western Pennsylvania a multi-million dollar purchase order for the vacuum thermal processing of nickel-based nuclear steam generator tubing, Solar Atmospheres announced recently. Solar, reported to have the world's largest commercial vacuum furnace, said that it was selected for its "unique ability to process the 48-foot long parts."
"Our new customer faced a critical and out-of-the-ordinary challenge of vacuum stress reliving these massive parts," said Michael Johnson, sales manager for Solar Atmospheres of Western Pennsylvania, in a statement. "Our distinctive furnace capability was a perfect match for this special project. We are fortunate to be able to leverage the expertise of our sister company, Solar Manufacturing, to make our vacuum furnaces more robust and flexible."
