Stainless Steel Enclosures Engineered for Sensitive Environments

URBANA, Ohio-- The Rittal Corporation recently introduced new stainless steel enclosures that are reported to be "precisely engineered for multiple applications," offering design engineers more options for applications where cleanliness and sanitation are paramount. The new Hygienic Design (HD) enclosures offer a smooth surface grain, internal hinges, washable gaskets, and locks, but have no crevices that can trap debris or contaminates, according to the manufacturer.

The HD enclosures are available with screw covers for smaller, integrated applications, or with hinged doors for larger installations. Both are created from ANSI 304 stainless steel with a 400 grain brushed surface. Wall and door surfaces are angled to prevent objects from adhering to them, allowing water to run off easily.

To improve the flow of water around the unit during wash-down procedures, HD enclosures can be mounted with rounded stand-off brackets on the back. Using optional hardware, larger HD enclosures can be mounted on new HD leveling feet and fitted with a wire shelf to assist with cable routing.

All mounting threads are concealed to keep them free of debris and contaminants. In addition, optional stainless steel cable glands have smooth, solid exterior surfaces and are self-sealing to enable high-pressure washing.

According to the manufacturer, the HD enclosures have continuous silicone seal door gaskets that can be easily replaced as necessary, without special tools. The blue gaskets align with a specifically-engineered fitted channel to provide a tight seal without any adhesive. Their distinctive color makes any particulate splashed on the seal stand out for easier recognition and removal, the company says.

In addition to significantly reducing the risk of contamination, the hygienic features of the HD enclosures are said to allow shorter cleaning times while using less water and chemicals; they also reduce downtime for cleaning and maintenance. Rittal can manufacture the enclosures to NEMA 4X specifications.

Rittal ( manufactures a variety of standard, modified standard, and custom engineered enclosures, racks, and accessories for industrial, data center, outdoor, and hybrid applications. The company is the U.S. subsidiary of Rittal GmbH& Co. KG.
