Metal Stamping: Tools, Dies and Fixtures

Metal Stamping

Door and window hardware; hand tools; computer parts, electronic components and television parts; and telecommunication elements are some of the pieces manufactured by stamping. Brackets, chassis, plates, and connectors are typical of stamped components. Deep drawing (a part deeper than its own opening) is included in the techniques applied in stamping.

Any metal capable of being stamped such as steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminum and copper can be used to manufacture parts from 3/16" diameter to 3ft. x 4ft. Thicknesses of the materials being used can vary from 0.005" to 0.075".

Presses with capacities to 400 tons are used in stamping. It is recommended that secondary-operation machinery used in this field include welders, drilling and tapping tools, saws and CNC equipment.

Hardware insertion, subassembly and assembly functions should also be among the operations provided by a full-service stamping company.

The basics of stamping, secondary operations and assembly functions should be supported by an engineering team that delivers creative solutions, personnel skilled in inspection, competent toolmakers and quality methods that inherently promote continuous improvement.
